Walk No.4 - The Spetchells and Hagg Bank - page 1 of 3

Walking for Pleasure
Prudhoe and District

A circular walk on level ground along the bank of the Tyne, with some steep climbs around Hagg Bank and the opportunity to climb on top of the Spetchells. In poor weather some of the paths will be muddy and around the Spetchells a chalky deposit is left on shoes or trainers. Good walking footwear is recommended.
Walk No.4
The Spetchells and Hagg Bank

Time: about 2 hours
Distance: 3½ miles (approx)
Map: OS Pathfinder 548
The walk starts at the Tyne Riverside Country Park at Low Prudhoe close to the railway station. There is a Visitor Centre which has toilet facilities and on some days refreshments are available. The Centre was the old C.W.S. Store which has been modernised and extended. A stone giving the date 1896 is in the wall at the rear of the Centre.
Leave the carpark by the gate leading to the river, turn right and go under the Ovingham Bridge (1). Built in 1883, it was a toll-bridge until 1945. The new footbridge which runs parallel with the road bridge goes over the site of the old toll-house.
Follow the roadway along the side of the river. There is a great variety of bird life here, including herons, dippers, ducks, cormorants and, if you are lucky, the blue flash of a kingfisher! On the other side of the river you can see the tower of Ovingham church.
