Walking for Pleasure
| A circular walk, fairly steep going through pasture land and skirting some ancient woodland on the outward leg; some excellent views of Northumberland and Durham, and an easy return journey downhill along track and roadway. In poor weather it may be muddy in parts. Good walking footwear is recommended. | Walk No.2 From Moor Road to Hedley Fell Time: 1 to 2 hours Distance: 3 miles (approx) Map: OS Pathfinder 548 |
| The walk starts on the outskirts of Prudhoe and is reached by ascending South Road opposite the Northumbria Hotel. Turn right into Moor Road opposite the shop and continue past the High School for about half a mile. If using a car, pass a tight Z-bend which includes a small, narrow stone bridge. A convenient parking space can be found on the left-hand verge. |
| |
| The stone bridge has a plaque which bears the inscription, "This bridge was erected at the expense of W.E.Surtees, Esq." The rest is severely weather worn but the date can be read as 1865. W.E.Surtees was a land owner and built the bridge for his tenants, providing an easy passage over the Stanley Burn. | |
| (1) About 200 yards uphill beyond the bridge a gate on the right gives access to a bridleway which leads to Hyons Wood about a mile distant. | |
| Hyons Wood is included in Stockdale’s Survey (1586) as one of the Earl of Northumberland’s woods within the barony of Prudhoe. It is thought that the woods were clear felled in the past, but since then the regeneration has been largely natural. Some areas are mainly birch, but there are many other broadleaf trees. With an abundance of wild flowers it is an ideal habitat for wildlife and birds. It is listed as ancient woodland in the Nature Conservancy Council’s inventory of 1982. | |
