Walk No.1 - Durham Riding via South Road - page 3 of 3
Turn to the right, around the rear of the farm buildings and cross another stile. Turn to the right again to begin the way back. The pathway now follows the edge of a field and some woodland. Keep heading in the same direction to another stile. Continue uphill until you come to a metal gateway set into the hedgerow. Go through the gate, head diagonally across the field to a line of trees to another gateway. Go through this second gate and continue up an easier slope until you come to another stile ( 7 ). Now you are at the top of the rising ground again and can pause to admire the magnificent views to the north.
From the stile the path leads downwards through another field, over another stile. Then cross another field, with a large barn set in the corner, to a stile set in a hedgerow which borders a metalled road. This is Highfield Lane. From the stile turn to the right and walk back along Highfield Lane passing a Middle School, the gate where you first entered the footpath across the fields, and the R.C. Church. You can then return back down South Road to the car park behind the Northumbria Hotel. Refreshments are available at various premises on Prudhoe Front Street.
