Walk No.1 - Durham Riding via South Road - page 1 of 3

Walking for Pleasure
Prudhoe and District

A short circular walk on roads, then across farmland with some fine views of the Tyne Valley and weather permitting, the Cheviot Hills. The going is fairly steep in places and in some parts may be muddy in poor weather. Good walking footwear is recommended.
Walk No.1
Durham Riding via South Road

Time: 1 to 1½ hours
Distance: 3 miles (approx)
Map: OS Pathfinder 548
Start at the car park behind the Northumbria Hotel (1). Opposite the entrance to the car park is the parish church of St Mary Magdalene, built in 1880. The lytch-gate is a war memorial to the people of Prudhoe who lost their lives in WW I and WW II.
Turn right and walk up South Road, a fairly steep hill so take your time. Note some of the interesting buildings you pass; the old Locomotive Inn, the Working Men's Social Club (which was once the Palace Assembly Rooms), the old Post Office, the plaque set in the wall of Prudhoe House commemorating the visit of John Wesley in 1757.
At the top of the hill the road forks (2). Take the right hand fork along the side of St Matthew's RC Club (see picture overleaf). It was built as a Reading Room in 1885 by the Liddell family, who were the owners of Prudhoe Hall Estate. A stone set above the doorway shows the entwined initials of Matthew and Susanna Liddell. They also built the Old School and the Old School House which are across the road.
