Defending Prudhoe Castle
by "Oneighty"
Odinel de Umfreville is defending Prudhoe Castle against William of Scotland.
Odinel stations his 40 archers around the castle ramparts, so that William's
scouts can see 11 archers along each of the four sides of the castle.
Here's a diagram showing how Odinel positions his 40 men around the walls.
After the first assault, William's archers kill four of Odinel's archers, yet
William's scouts report that they can still see 11 archers along each side.
Odinel loses four more archers on each of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th assaults.
Yet, after each onslaught, William's men still see 11 archers along each wall of the castle.
The final (5th) assault succeeds in killing another two of William's archers.
On hearing that there are still 11 immortal archers along each wall,
William (for the sake of this puzzle) strikes camp and goes home.
Can you sketch the formation of Odinel's archers after each of the five attacks? Answers
